Utah Tech University to host Washington County Commission, Utah House debates

Washington County Commission and Utah State House of Representatives District 72 candidates will share their campaign platforms with the community when Utah Tech University’s Institute of Politics, the Washington County Debate Coalition and the St. George Area Chamber of Commerce host candidate debates later this month.

The debates are set to take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 19 in the Dolores Doré Eccles Fine Arts Center Main Stage Theater on the Utah Tech University campus. The debates are open to the public, and the community is welcome and encouraged to attend.

The first debate will include Washington County Commission candidates Gil Almquist, Robert Ford, Victor Iverson, Chuck Goode, Adam Snow and Rebecca Winsor. The second debate will be between Joseph Ellison and Ila Fica, the candidates for the Utah State House of Representatives District 72 seat.

Each debate will last one hour, with a 30-minute intermission between the debates to allow the candidates to meet and greet the public.

“This is the second series of debates the coalition has sponsored,” said Vince Brown, co-chair of the Washington County Debate Coalition. “It feels like political participation, competitive races and robust debate are all gaining momentum in this community. It makes me very proud of where I live to see citizens having meaningful interaction with their elected leaders.”

Utah Tech’s Institute of Politics serves the campus and community as a hub for civic engagement, student leadership and public policy education and research. The institute provides opportunities to connect with policymakers, politicians, activists and academics.
