Repertory Dance Theatre, 3hattrio to perform together at DSU’s Celebrity Concert Series
To usher in the new year, Dixie State University’s Celebrity Concert Series is featuring a combined performance from Repertory Dance Theatre and southwest band 3hattrio.
The performance is set to take place at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 23 in Dixie State University’s M.K. Cox Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $25 each and available online at dsutix.com, in person at the Cox Box Office or over the phone at 435-652-7800.
The intimate pairing between the dance company and musical trio, who have toured together throughout the West, will be a highlight of the evening. Additionally, the Celebrity Concert Series performance will include the number “Crippled Up Blues and Other Tales of the Desert,” which honors the culture and traditions of those who have worked and lived in the deserts of the American Southwest. The performance will feature students from Dixie State University’s Dance Department.
Led by Artistic Director Linda C Smith, Repertory Dance Theatre aims to spread its message of “Art in Motion” through its performances. The company, which received a Rockefeller grant in 1966 that established it as the nation’s first repertory dance company, has been dedicated to the creation, performance, perpetuation and appreciation of modern dance for more than 50 years. RDT presents its audiences with a diverse range of modern dance styles and choreographers to highlight the dancers’ grace, athleticism, beauty and power.
With a signature sound deemed as American desert music, 3hattrio’s twist on western music is driven by steady drumming that is often overlaid with rough, warm vocals, upbeat banjo melodies and a blanket of strings. Rooted in Virgin, Utah, 3hattrio has played together for six years and released their fifth album, “Live at Zion” in November 2019.
Dixie State University’s Celebrity Concert Series will continue with concerts from Minguet Quartet at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 31 and 3 p.m. on Feb. 1 in DSU’s Eccles Concert Hall. The remainder of the season includes performances by Cirque Mechanics on Feb. 5, Texas Tenors on Feb. 20, One Night in Memphis on March 7, Wartime Radio Revue on March 20, BYU Ballroom Dance Company on March 21 and Ensemble Phoenix Munich on April 3.
