Multicultural & Inclusion Center to host Inclusive Excellence Week
In an effort to educate and train the campus and community on inclusivity, Dixie State University’s Multicultural & Inclusion Center is celebrating Inclusive Excellence Week with a variety of events and activities.
“We host Inclusive Excellence Week because our campus is increasing in diversity. One of President Richard Williams’ strategic goals in the university’s strategic plan is to not only increase diversity among students, but in faculty and staff as well,” Mike Nelson, assistant director of the Multicultural & Inclusion Center, said. “With a large diverse student population, it is important to highlight different cultures and gain knowledge about our student population.”
To kick off the week, Shadman Bashir, visiting professor of law and international relations, will give the lecture “9/11 until present (Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the middle east and South Asia, ISIS and the future of wars).” Concluding “The Muslim World and the Quest for Shangri-La,” a lecture series on the socio-historical insights on 2,000 years of fighting for peace, Bashir’s lecture is set to take place at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 30 in the Dunford Auditorium, located in the Browning Resource Center.
In honor of LGBT History Month, DSU’s LGBTQ Resource Center is sponsoring a free screening of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 30 in the Gardner Center Ballroom. The film is a trailblazing cult classic and controversial landmark of LGBTQ+ representation on the big screen.
Later in the week, DSU Native American students will compete in the Miss Native Dixie State University Pageant at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 1 in the Dolores Doré Eccles Fine Arts Center Concert Hall. Contestants will showcase traditional values and the winner will serve as an ambassador for the Native American population at DSU.
To conclude the week, DSU’s Chief Diversity Officer will host “Between the Lines — Voices of Israel: Stories Untold,” in which two young Israelis will speak on their struggles, successes, military service, hopes, and dreams. Attendees are encouraged to ask tough questions and learn about what it is like to live in a country that is the subject of much discussion. The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 2 in the Gardner Center Ballroom.
“Come and join our students as they learn to gain cultural competence in a diverse world,” Nelson said.
