AmeriCorps recognizes Dixie State University for serving the community

DSUCommunityService1The Corporation for National and Community Service recently named Dixie State University to its annual President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the 2015-16 academic year. Known as AmeriCorps, the corporation established the honor roll in 2006 to recognize institutions of higher education that foster exemplary community service programs and promote effective practices in campus-community partnerships. “We are so excited to be on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Dixie’s continued commitment to service is truly indicative of the Dixie Spirit that has sustained this community through the years,” Anilee Bundy, DSU coordinator of clubs and service, said. “It is an honor to work with students, faculty and staff who are always thinking of innovative and impactful ways to serve and make our university and our community better.” During the 2015-16 academic year, Dixie State students logged nearly 10,000 hours of service through the Clubs and Service Branches of Student Government alone. Another 1,321 DSU students fulfilled more than 45,000 hours of institutional community engagement, and 28 faculty members teach service-based courses. Additionally, through the AmeriCorps Education Award Program, 170 members from Dixie State contributed 54,000 hours of service, and as part of the AmeriCorps Higher Education Elevated VISTA Project, a full-time member at Dixie States served 1,700 hours worth more than $40,000. As the university strives to log an increasing number of service hours each year, Dixie State is in the process of opening a comprehensive service center on campus that will allow the institution to continue to grow in service. As part of its service efforts, Dixie State participates in the Utah Campus Compact program, which unites Utah colleges and universities in the goal of strengthening communities through service. “It’s an exciting time to be a Trailblazer as Dixie State University is truly striving to set the standard for service in the state of Utah,” Bundy said.
