Brooks the Bison, Dixie State University’s new mascot, is en route to St. George as he prepares to make his debut Thursday night at Dixie State’s season-opening football game at the newly named Legend Solar Stadium.
After a year of developing the Trailblazer identity and coordinating a massive rebranding effort across the campus and entire community, Dixie State is eager to introduce Brooks the Bison to the community when the Trailblazers take on New Mexico Highlands at 6 p.m. Tickets are now on sale at dsutix.com and in the Avenna Center Ticket Office or can be purchased at Legend Solar Stadium on game day.
“There is a palpable and renewed excitement at Dixie State University as students, faculty, staff and the community have embraced the new Trailblazer identity,” said Dr. Jordon Sharp, Dixie State chief marketing and communication officer. “Brooks the Bison hats, T-shirts and swag have been flying of bookstore shelves, and we are all ready to finally meet this great symbol of our trailblazing spirit and heritage."
The athletic logos featuring Brooks were first introduced to the community April 11, when Dixie State officially became home of the Trailblazers. Now, the Brooks the Bison Mascot is ready to join Trailblazer Nation. Beyond recognizing the university as a trendsetting institution dedicated to employing innovative teaching techniques and preparing students to be Trailblazers in their careers and personal lives, the Trailblazer identity has been the perfect fit for Dixie because of its nod to St. George’s blazing-hot climate.
The new identity is paired with the bison mascot because the burly beasts were America’s original trailblazers. Trails created as bison stampeded across the country were adopted by Native Americans and pioneers as hunting and warrior paths and assisted with the migration out west.
Dixie State’s mascot is named after Dixie’s original trailblazer, Samuel Brooks. The eager student spent the night on the steps in front of St. George Stake Academy on the eve of its opening in 1911 to be the first person to pay the institution’s $10 tuition and secure student status.
Legend Solar co-founders Shaun Alldredge and Shane Perkins will also be recognized during the season-opener for their $10 million contribution toward renovating DSU’s football stadium. Additionally, Dixie State’s newly named and re-organized student section, The Stampede will make their debut.
As it enters its first game as the Trailblazers, the DSU football team will be led by Shay McClure, who begins his first season as DSU head coach after serving as director of defense last season. McClure is joined by offensive coordinator Reilly Murphy and defensive coordinator Shawn Howe on a staff that features four returning coaches from last season and eight newcomers to the staff for the 2016 season.
