Utah Tech University, Intermountain Health to offer Mini-Med School lecture series

To help community members better understand their health, Utah Tech University’s Institute for Continued Learning and Intermountain Health are collaborating to host their Mini-Med School community education program for the second consecutive year.

Mini-Med School is set to take place on Wednesdays from Feb. 11 through March 4 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Dunford Auditorium of the Browning Learning Resource Center on the Utah Tech campus. The series is open to the community and free to attend. No pre-registration is necessary and membership in ICL is not required.

“At ICL/Intermountain Health’s Mini-Med School, you can spend a full hour with a doctor, who will discuss health problems that are of interest to you, and then give you time to ask questions,” Dr. Warren Stucki, a urologist and president of the ICL Council, said. “It’s very unlikely you’ll leave saying, ‘I don’t understand.’”

Lecture topics and presenters include:

  • Feb. 11: Functional Fitness by Dr. Gina Marie Fogilia
  • Feb. 18: Aging Bone & Joints by Dr. Robert Jamieson
  • Feb. 25: What’s New in Radiation Therapy by Dr. Ned Williams
  • March 4: The Aging Brain by Dr. Kyle Gulbranson

“The series’ philosophy is that health education should empower patients to become advocates for their own health care and make informed decisions,” Stucki said. “Investing in community health education is not merely a social service; it is the cornerstone of a vibrant, resilient and thriving society.”

Mini-Med School is just one of the ways Utah Tech University’s Institute for Continued Learning engages and educates Southern Utah residents. Serving a community of primarily retired and semi-retired lifelong learners, ICL offers a wide variety of classes, clubs, wellness programs, field trips and social activities led by subject-matter experts and fellow ICL members.

ICL membership is $60 per semester and allows participants to enroll in as many classes as they wish. Registration is currently open for ongoing spring classes. Mini-Med School, however, is a lecture series that is free and open to the public.
