Utah Tech University’s Mechanical and Electrical Engineering programs recently earned accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, providing assurance that graduates are prepared to enter critical technical fields with the skills and confidence necessary to meet industry demands worldwide.
“ABET accreditation highlights our commitment to our polytechnic mission and to the highest standards of academic quality,” Michael Lacourse, special projects lead for innovation at Utah Tech, said. “It is further evidence that Utah Tech is building programs that exemplify excellence in hands-on, career-focused education, making us a truly open, comprehensive polytechnic university where students learn by doing and graduate ready to make an impact.”
UT’s engineering program has seen a 34% growth over the past three years and recently received funding to embed industry projects and internships into the mechatronics program.
“The growth and success we have seen in our engineering program is a direct result of our program’s strong ties to industry needs,” Aaron Davis, interim dean of Utah Tech’s College of Science, Engineering, and Technology, said. “By working alongside employers in the region, we’re preparing students with the skills and experience that companies need to continue their incredible work.”
As another indicator of the department’s success and growth, the engineering program received $429,270 from the state Engineering Initiative to hire additional faculty and equipment to expand its programs.
“The vision of our program is to provide the premier undergraduate engineering education,” David Christensen, chair of UT’s Engineering Department, said. “Achieving ABET accreditation is evidence that we are delivering on that promise and giving students the hands-on training they need to walk into the workforce confident and career-ready.”
With ABET’s seal of approval, Utah Tech joins an elite group of institutions nationwide recognized for engineering excellence, positioning the university as a regional leader in producing the next generation of problem-solvers and innovators. Utah Tech University’s Engineering Department offers bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering and mechatronics as well as an associate of pre-engineering.
