Bringing together the campus community and leaders from across the state, Utah Tech University officially inaugurated Shane B. Smeed as the institution’s 19th president on Friday, Oct. 24, during a special ceremony held on campus.

“President Smeed leads with authenticity, vision and care for our students, alumni, faculty, staff and community,” Deven Macdonald, chair of Utah Tech University’s Board of Trustees, said. “Today, we celebrate the bright future ahead for Utah Tech University and the continued growth of an institution that is shaping the next generation of innovators and leaders.”

During his inaugural address, Smeed outlined his vision for the university, focused on student success and partnering with the community.

“Utah Tech University’s future is bright because our students are at the center of everything we do,” Smeed said after the ceremony. “Guided by innovation, imagination, inspiration and integrity, we are building a university that prepares Trailblazers not just for successful careers, but for meaningful lives of impact.”

Additionally, Smeed emphasized the importance of collaboration, noting that the university’s strength lies in its people and their shared commitment to student success. He also announced that the university has begun developing its next five-year strategic plan, which will guide Utah Tech’s continued growth and academic distinction beginning in 2026.

Smeed was appointed by the Utah Board of Higher Education as the 19th president of Utah Tech University in February and officially began his tenure on May 1. With 27 years of experience serving in higher education leadership, Smeed brings a deep commitment to innovation, student success and academic excellence with him to Trailblazer Nation.

Before joining Utah Tech, Smeed served as president of Park University in Parkville, Missouri, where he led strategic initiatives focused on student engagement and institutional advancement. He holds a master’s degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration from Saint Louis University and an MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management.

Smeed and his wife, Angela, have been married for 26 years. They are the proud parents of three children: Samantha (23), who lives in St. George with her husband, Bryson; Andrew (20), who is currently serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Calgary, Canada, and is planning to attend Utah Tech upon his return in January; and Landon (16), a student at Crimson Cliffs High School.

Smeed’s leadership is characterized by a student-centered approach, a passion for lifelong learning and a steadfast belief in the transformative power of higher education.

“President Smeed’s leadership is driving Utah Tech University to reach new levels of achievement,” said Geoffrey Landward, Utah Commissioner of Higher Education. “He puts students first, fosters innovation and builds community ties that really matter. With his vision and energy, Utah Tech’s future is bright and boldly shaping the next chapter of higher education in our state.”
