Dixie State University President’s Colleagues meeting explores open-heart surgery

At the next installment of the President’s Colleagues of Dixie State University meeting series, Dr. Roger C. Millar will present on open-heart surgery and how it became available locally.

Dr. Millar will present "How Open-Heart Surgery Came to Dixie" on Monday, Dec. 2 at noon in Lecture Hall 156 of the Russell C. Taylor Health Science Center, located on the Dixie Regional Medical Center campus at 1526 East Medical Center Drive. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

In his presentation, Dr. Millar will reflect on his years as a surgeon and discuss how the open-heart surgery program came to be in St. George, Utah. After practicing as a cardiovascular surgeon in Medford, Oregon for ten years, Dr. Millar moved to Salt Lake City, where he practiced at LDS Hospital for 16 years and eventually moved to St. George and established the program in 2003.

The youngest of twelve children, Millar was born in 1941 in Shelley, Idaho. He graduated from the University of Utah Medical School in 1969 and completed a surgical residency at Duke University in 1977. After practicing as a cardiovascular surgeon for over 30 years, Dr. Millar retired in 2012 to serve as a Mission President for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for three years. 

The President’s Colleagues of Dixie State, established more than 20 years ago by former DSU President Douglas Alder, is a group of retired professors and other professionals who live mostly in the Washington County area. Alder, who also started DSU’s Honors Program, organized the group as a way to increase academic activities on campus.
