Grammy Award-winning Mariachi Divas coming to Dixie State University
Sharing their talents through live performances as well as discussing their experience as an all-female mariachi band, two-time Grammy Award-winning Mariachi Divas are coming to Dixie State University as a part of the lecture series Dixie Forum: A Window on the World.
Five of the Divas, including their founder Cindy Shea, will present “The Mariachi Divas!” on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at noon in the Dunford Auditorium, located in the Browning Resource Center on the Dixie State campus. They will also perform outside the north entrance of the Jeffrey R. Holland Centennial Commons at 3:00 p.m. Admission is free for both performances, and the public is encouraged to attend.
Founded in 1999 by musical director and trumpet player Cindy Shea, Mariachi Divas come from all over the world, including North America, South America, Asia and Mexico. Featured at Disneyland to celebrate the release Disney’s Coco, the Divas have found success performing daily at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts in Anaheim, California as the official mariachi of Disney California for the past 16 years. Their discography includes 15 professional full-length album releases through Shea Records and East Side Records, as well as providing music for commercials, advertisements, television and film.
Shea developed her love of music at the age of eight. Having studied at California State University, Fullerton and Florida International University, she gained a deep appreciation for Latino culture that would guide her musical career. In 1999, she was invited to join the Mariachi Alondras, an all-female group that inspired her to start her own mariachi group, the Mariachi Divas.
Dixie Forum is a weekly lecture series designed to introduce the St. George community and DSU students, faculty and staff to diverse ideas and personalities while widening their worldviews via a 50-minute presentation. The next installment of Dixie Forum will feature professional fine artist Jennifer Gennari discussing Fine Art Painting. The forum is set to take place at noon on Nov. 5 in the Dunford Auditorium.
