DSU President’s Colleagues to host presentation on Muhammad
In the next installment of the President’s Colleagues of Dixie State University meeting series, Environmental Biologist Dr. Joseph B. Platt will present “Muhammad, the Prophet and Politician of Islam.”
Platt will share insights he gained about the Prophet Muhammad while living among Muslim people in Arabia for 20 years. Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, has a unique combination of secular and religious influences on the world stage. He was born in 570 AD in the remote trading village of Mecca. By his death, at age 63, Islam was the faith of the Arabian Peninsula and North Africa. Within a hundred years, the Islamic empire was the largest the world had ever known.
Platt’s President’s Colleagues presentation will take place at noon on Jan. 7 in Lecture Hall 156 of Dixie State’s Russell C. Taylor Health Science Center, located on the Dixie Regional Medical Center campus at 1526 East Medical Center Drive. The meeting is free and open to the public.
Working with the protection of endangered species, Platt served as a wildlife advisor to the king of Bahrain for seven years, was an environmental advisor to the ruler of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, for 13 years and advised the kings of Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Jordan. He also worked on projects in Kuwait, Iran; Oman, Pakistan; and Eritrea, East Africa.
Platt earned a bachelor’s degree in wildlife from Utah State University, a master’s in zoology from Brigham Young University and a doctorate in ecology from Cornell University. He continues to work with renewable energy developers in wind and solar energy facilities throughout the U.S. and currently teaches in Dixie State’s Biological Sciences Department.
The President’s Colleagues meeting series will continue with a presentation from Dixie State Professor of Art and renowned artist Del Parson at noon on Feb. 4 in the Taylor Health Science Center.
Established more than 20 years ago by former DSU President Douglas Alder, the President’s Colleagues of DSU is a group of retired professors and other professionals who live mostly in the Washington County area. Alder, who also started DSU’s Honors Program, organized the group as a way to increase academic activities on campus.
