Dixie State University’s Visiting Writers Series to host author Natasha Sajé
As part of the Visiting Writers Series, hosted by Dixie State University’s English Department, award-winning poet and creative nonfiction writer Natasha Sajé will present a creative writing craft talk and poetry reading.
Sharing about her experiences as a writer, Sajé will present her craft talk at 1 p.m. on Nov. 2 in Room 476 of Holland Centennial Commons. Later that evening, a poetry reading and book signing will be held at 7 p.m. in the Financial Education Center in Dixie State’s Ernö and Etel Udvar-Hazy School of Business. Both events are free, and the public is encouraged to attend.
Sajé is the author of three books of poems: “Red Under the Skin,” “Bend” and “Vivarium,” which was selected by poet Dean Young to receive the Poetry Society of America's 2008 Alice Fay di Castagnola Award. Young praised “Vivarium” for being "Resourceful, restless, witty and substantially intelligent. Each poem surprised me, taught me something, delighted and illuminated and stretched me.”
Additionally, “Bend” received praise from the late American poet C.D Wright, who described Sajé’s work as a “curious assortment of lettered forbears including Cotton Mather, Henry Vaughan, Nietzsche, Proust, Gertrude Stein and Mary Shelley.” Other honors Sajé has been awarded include the Robert Winner Award, a Fulbright Fellowship, The Campbell Corner Poetry Prize and the Utah Book Award.
Sajé, also the author of “Windows and Doors: A Poet Reads Literary Theory” and “Terroir: Essays on Otherness,” is a professor of English at Westminster College in Salt Lake City and has been teaching in the Vermont College M.F.A. in Writing program since 1996.
The Visiting Writers Series is part of the DSU English Department’s effort to provide students and community members with opportunities to meet authors and learn the tricks of the trade by bringing accomplished writers to campus. Dixie State’s English Department offers students opportunities to explore their talents through project-based courses and clubs, contrive meaning from ancient stories and contemporary speeches, share meaningful discussions with their peers, and learn to be critical, persuasive and driven to turn emotion into action.
