Global Education to host viewing of China Town Hall webcast
Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will talk to audiences in St. George and over a hundred other locations across the U.S. and Greater China during the 12th annual China Town Hall webcast.
Dixie State University’s Global Education Program is collaborating with the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations to host a screening of the interactive webcast discussion and question-and-answer session with Rice on the complex Sino-American relationship. Additionally, Dixie State will host Dr. Ira Kasoff, senior counselor for APCO Worldwide’s International Advisory Council, on campus to discuss China-related issues that have an impact on the local community.
The event will start at 3 p.m. on Oct. 9 in the Zion Room on the fifth floor of the Holland Centennial Commons on the Dixie State campus. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
In her China Town Hall discussion, Rice will speak on how China’s emergence as a global power, its role as a major trade partner amid recent frictions and its potential as a collaborator on key U.S. global policy initiatives impact the lives of all Americans. The conversation will help audiences around the country understand the challenges and opportunities of what has been characterized as the most important bilateral relationship of the 21st century.
Rice served as the 66th secretary of state of the United States, the second woman and first African American woman to hold the post. She also served as President George W. Bush’s assistant to the president for national security affairs from January 2001 to 2005, the first woman to hold the position. Rice is currently the Denning Professor in Global Business and the Economy at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Thomas and Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow on Public Policy at the Hoover Institution and professor of Political Science at Stanford University.
Kasoff, who has been an APCO senior counselor since 2010, will present his lecture “Challenges Faced by the Chinese Leadership in the Global Economy and an Update on the U.S. Trade Dispute with China” on the Dixie State campus. His extensive experience in Asia spans more than three decades with seven commercial service assignments in the region in addition to private sector and academic experiences. Additionally, from 2007 to 2010, he served as deputy assistant secretary for Asia at the U.S. Department of Commerce, where he oversaw Asia trade policy for the department, engaged in trade negotiations with officials of key counterpart governments and served as the senior adviser on Asia to two secretaries of commerce.
