Community Education program offers variety of educational, recreational classes this fall

Enrollment is now open for fall classes offered through Dixie State University’s Community Education program. Open to all teens and adults, DSU’s community education classes explore a variety of subjects ranging from music, dance and art to finance, technology and foreign languages. A collaborative effort between Dixie State, the City of St. George and the Washington County School District, the Community Education program is ideal for anyone seeking to gain a new skill, social interaction or self-improvement. Beginning in September and continuing until December, the noncredit-bearing classes usually take place once per week in the evening. Classes vary from one night to twelve weeks in length and range in price from $10 to $150. “We are excited for our Fall 2018 semester and have a great line-up of classes planned,” Tyson Pulsipher, director of Community & Continuing Education at Dixie State, said. “With nearly 20 new courses and over 50 returning courses, there is something for everyone. Our brochures will be hitting mailboxes soon, and our online catalog and registration is open now at ce.utahtech.edu.” For those wanting to step back in the classroom to take courses with a more academic focus, a variety of languages such as American Sign Language, French, Hindi and Spanish will be taught. Looking at different aspects of finance, other classes will look at everything from day trading, stocks, the futures market and foreign exchange to reverse mortgages and personal budgeting. Classes with a technology focus range from instruction on how to operate an android smartphone to syncing multiple Apple devices to using software such as Adobe Lightroom for photo editing and Microsoft Office for home computing. With a more recreational approach, other classes offer instruction on archaeology, golf, exercising with dogs and photography. For those wanting to get up and move, a variety of dancing styles such as country western, flamenco, merengue, two-step and salsa will be taught. Emphasizing arts and crafts, select classes feature instruction on everything from drawing, water colors and oil painting to soap making, crochet, culinary arts and digital scrapbooking. Rounding out the lineup of classes, lessons on how to play instruments such as the harmonica, ukulele and piano will be offered. Registration for Community Education classes is available in person at the Dixie State Campus at the North Plaza Building, located at 46 S. 1000 East, over the phone at 435-652-7975 or online at ce.utahtech.edu.
