Community Education to host free seminar on disaster preparedness
To teach residents how to prepare for the top twelve risks Washington County faces, Dixie State University Community Education is sponsoring Fully Prepared for Any Disaster, a free seminar on disaster preparedness.
The seminar will address various threats and emergencies and their likelihood and severity. Participants will learn about natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods and wildfires, as well as man-made ones, including hazmat spills, local crimes and terrorism. Set to take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on May 17, Fully Prepared for Any Disaster will be held in the Boeing Auditorium on the first floor of the Ernö and Etel Udvar-Hazy School of Business on the Dixie State campus.
"The Federal Emergency Management Agency and Utah Emergency Management strongly urge Washington County Residents to be prepared for the most likely disasters,” said Retired U.S. Army officer and counterintelligence agent Scott Thomas, who will present. “My seminar will provide you the information you need to be prepared for disasters and emergencies."
A Washington County resident who volunteers much of his time to helping the region be prepared for disasters and emergencies, Thomas has served on five continents in disasters and combat zones. He holds a master's degree in security and risk management in addition to a variety of emergency and disaster certifications.
Attendees will leave the presentation equipped to develop their own family or business emergency and disaster plan in addition to receiving an electronic copy of the presentation and supporting maps, guides and templates.
“There is a chance all of us will be affected by a disaster sometime in our lives,” Tyson Pulsipher, director of Dixie State’s Community & Continuing Education, said. “Dixie State University is sponsoring this seminar because we feel it is of great importance to community. We'll also be offering a more in-depth preparedness course this fall."
