DECA chapter excels at state competition, qualifies for international conference
Dixie State University had a strong showing at the 2018 Utah Collegiate DECA State Career Development Conference, taking home 18 awards and qualifying students for the International Career Development Conference.
All 14 Dixie State students who attended the competition at Salt Lake Community College either placed in the top three in their divisions or were invited to the international conference in Washington, D.C.
"Dixie DECA students continue to dominate in state and national business competitions, despite being from a comparatively smaller school,” Matthew Harris, Dixie State DECA advisor and assistant professor of management information systems, said. “It just shows the caliber of students we have at DSU.”
Dixie State competed against students from seven other Utah institutions, including Salt Lake Community College, University of Utah, LDS Business College, Weber State University, Snow College, Utah State University and Southern Utah University. With four first-place winners, four second-place winners, two third-place winners and four fourth-place winners, Dixie State received the second-highest number of first-place and second-place awards and qualified the second-most number of students for the international conference.
Preparing students for their future careers, the conferences present students with challenges such as solving problems and accomplishing goals associated with the provided business scenarios. Other categories require students to give prepared presentations to business professionals in line with the international business organization’s mission to prepare students to be leaders and entrepreneurs in the areas of marketing, finance, hospitality and management.
Dixie State DECA students now are preparing for the international conference and working to raise the funding needed to travel to Washington, D.C., in April.
