The Dixie State University Art Department and Sears Art Gallery invite artists of the community to attend Business of Art, a seminar that teaches how to transform talent and creativity into a thriving art business.
Business of Art will kick off with a reception at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 17 and hold sessions from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 18 at the North Plaza on the DSU campus. The seminar will share ideas on becoming profitable and self-sufficient, using social media, networking effectively in the industry and more.
Artist and storyteller Dilleen Marsh is the keynote speaker for the Friday evening reception and will present “Surprised by an Idea.” She has been illustrating and making fine art for more than 50 years, including children’s books and pieces for various Utah shows and galleries. Marsh was a designer and senior designer for New Era Magazine for 14 years and now works from her home studio, posting her art on Instagram and her blog.
Amy Jorgensen, the executive director and curator of the Granary Art Center and an associate professor of visual art at Snow College, will present “Building a Creative Life” at the luncheon & keynote on Saturday in the Gardner Ballroom. Jorgensen will speak on how artists can foster communities and utilize their relationships to succeed.
“Relationships are the foundation to building a presence as an artist, engaging a community and securing the resources and opportunities needed to sustain a creative life,” DSU Art Curator Kathy Cieslewicz said. “As artists we need creative, intellectual and economic communities to thrive.”
Cieslewicz originated the Business of Art program and facilitates the event. Paul and Susan Bingham, owners of the Maynard Dixon Gallery, serve as honorary founding co-chairs. Business of Art is hosted in collaboration with the St. George Art Commission, Utah Division of Arts & Museums, Southern Utah Art Guild, Dixie Technical College and Southwest Technical College.

The workshop fee, which covers the Friday reception and Saturday sessions and lunch, is $50.
