Jazz Ensemble to open school year with fall concert
Set to perform a wide range of musical selections, the Dixie State University Jazz Ensemble will present its opening concert of the 2017-18 season this month.
The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 in the Main Stage Theater of the Dolores Doré Eccles Fine Art Center on the Dixie State campus.
The ensemble, for which students audition to join, will perform music including the 1920s hit “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” Frank Sinatra’s version of “Our Love is Here to Stay,” Dizzy Gillespie’s “Manteca,” and Thad Jones’ “Three and One.” More contemporary arrangements such as Herbie Hancock’s “Chameleon” and Justin Timberlake’s “Pusher Love Girl,” will be performed as well.
“I love working with the talented students of Dixie State,” Dr. Glenn Webb, chair of the DSU Music Department and director of the Jazz Ensemble, said. “This concert will highlight individual and group efforts in a unique way and serve as a wonderful example of ‘active learning. active life.’ in the College of the Arts.”
The Music Department is collaborating with the Assistant Art Professor McGarren Flack and his students to produce a backdrop for the performance. A large mural of a jazz-inspired chameleon will be featured on stage with the ensemble throughout the evening.
“I am grateful to Professor Flack and his students for making a contribution to the jazz event,” Webb said.
General admission is $5 and tickets will be available at the Eccles Fine Arts Center Box Office one hour prior to the concert. Tickets will also be available in advance at the DSU Ticket Office located in the M.K. Cox Performing Arts Center or online at dsutix.com.
