In collaboration with the Dixie State University Art Department, artist Sarah Pike will present on ceramic art at the next installment of the university’s weekly lecture series Dixie Forum: A Window on the World.
Pike’s lecture is set to take place from noon to 12:50 p.m. on Oct. 3 in the Dunford Auditorium of the Browning Resource Center on the DSU campus. Admission is free, and the public is encouraged to attend.
An artist who makes functional slab-built pottery in her home studio in British Columbia, Canada, Pike is inspired by the mountainous landscape surrounding her home, the rich history of ceramics, antique tin ware, textured metal and vintage farm items.
“I enjoy pottery that conveys personality, a slight air of attitude and that first step off the path. In that vein, my pots are never entirely symmetrical, as though they are leaning toward animation,” Pike said. “I like this static sense of energy in pottery. It evokes the plastic nature of clay in its raw form but also the movement associated with the pot's intended use. It reflects our beauty and awkward imperfections; imperfections that celebrate the handmade object over mass-produced industrial ware.”
Pike majored in ceramics at Alberta College of Art and Design. She went on to attend the University of Colorado Boulder and worked on graduate studies at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.
Dixie Forum is a weekly lecture series designed to introduce the St. George and Dixie State communities to diverse ideas and personalities while widening their worldviews via a 50-minute presentation. Dixie Forum will be on recess for the next two weeks but will resume on Oct. 24 with a lecture from Bill Howell.
