Dixie Forum to discuss Zion National Park’s transportation system
Discussing the history, impact and future of Zion National Park’s transportation system, Reuben Wadsworth, an adjunct history instructor at Dixie State University, will present at the next installment of the university’s weekly lecture series Dixie Forum: A Window on the World.
Wadsworth’s lecture, “Shuttle to Serenity,” is set to take place from noon to 12:50 p.m. on Sept. 26 in the Dunford Auditorium of the Browning Resource Center on the DSU campus. Admission is free, and the public is encouraged to attend.
In his presentation, Wadsworth will explain how Zion National Park’s shuttle system, which was implemented to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance the visitor experience, no longer accommodates Zion’s annual visitation numbers. He will address this issue by examining the current state of transportation and visitation within the park and looking at future directions for Zion’s transportation system. He also will trace the history of transportation in the park from its early days as a national monument and explain the events that led to the shuttle’s implementation.
Aside from instructing history as an adjunct professor at Dixie State, Wadsworth is a middle school English and creative writing teacher. As a contributor to St. George News, he writes about issues affecting Zion and is the author of St. George News’ Days Series, which explores the history of different locations within the region.
A national park aficionado, Wadsworth devoted his graduate research to the history of national park transportation. His master’s thesis was centered around Zion National Park’s shuttle system. He holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Utah State University and a Master of Arts in history from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Dixie Forum is a weekly lecture series designed to introduce the St. George and Dixie State communities to diverse ideas and personalities while widening their worldviews via a 50-minute presentation. Next, Dixie Forum will host a presentation on ceramic art at noon on Oct. 3 in the Dunford Auditorium. Artist Sarah Pike, in collaboration with the DSU Art Department and Assistant Professor of Art Shane Christensen, will present.
