Dixie State University approved to add 3 bachelor’s degrees, 3 certificates

In alignment with its strategic goal to broaden and enhance academic programs, Dixie State University has been approved by the Utah State Board of Regents to add three baccalaureate degrees and three certificates. Starting as soon as the Fall 2017 semester, Dixie State will offer Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art, Bachelor of Science in Information Systems & Analytics and Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs as well as Certificates of Proficiency in Multimedia Journalism, Social Media and Strategic Communication. The three baccalaureate degree programs must receive approval from the Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities, which is expected this summer, before they are final while the certificate programs have completed the approval process. “These new degree programs will continue to expand opportunities for Dixie State University students to pursue careers in the arts and business,” Dr. Michael Lacourse, Dixie State provost and vice president of academic affairs, said. “The BFA in Studio Art is a unique program in the state that will provide talented students with a pathway to Master of Fine Arts programs. The information systems and analytics program will be our first in the rapidly growing field of data science.” Adding to Dixie State’s currently offered Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in art, which offer emphases in 3D/sculpture/ceramics, art education, graphic design, painting/drawing, and photography/digital imaging, the BFA in Studio Art will offer students the option to study multiple media or focus on a single medium. As part of the program, students will develop a broad understanding of various media or, if they are only interested in one medium, they can take the courses necessary to understand it in greater depth. The BFA in Studio Art program will be open to students starting this fall. The Bachelor of Science in Information Systems & Analytics degree will first be offered this fall and will prepare students to use information resources and teach them how to analyze data to inform strategic planning and decision making. Graduates will develop skills in business administration, operations, analysis, leadership and project management and be prepared to fill career roles such as market research analyst, marketing specialist, information security analyst, operations research analyst, computer systems analyst and management analyst. Accepting students for the first time during the Fall 2018 semester, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree will add a traditional baccalaureate program track to Dixie State’s offerings, which already include an Associate Degree Nursing program and a post-licensure RN-to-Baccalaureate in Nursing track. The new program will prepare students to meet the complex demands of caring for patients in today’s healthcare system, work in interdisciplinary teams and be primarily responsible for direct patient care and care coordination. Additionally, the new degree program will build on the partnership between Dixie State and Dixie Regional Medical Center, who employs the majority of DSU nursing graduates. As for the three certificate programs Dixie State is adding to the Media Studies Department this fall, they are great options for students looking to gain additional experience to supplement degrees they are earning or have already earned or for students wanting to gain knowledge in the pertinent field without obtaining a degree. Dixie State’s new Certificate of Proficiency in Multimedia Journalism will prepare students to adapt to an industry that has changed with the proliferation of newer media forms. The certificate will teach students how to use social media, online videos and app technology that have become commonplace in the industry. Additionally, the program will provide proficiency in journalism production for those working toward becoming entrepreneurial or citizen journalists. While most college students have been using social media their entire lives, few fully understand its power. The Certificate of Proficiency in Social Media will teach students how social media is used to rally people around a cause or market a company while offering instruction on how to create campaigns, measure their effectiveness and reach people using the new media form. The Certificate of Proficiency in Strategic Communication will provide an opportunity for students who wish to gain knowledge in marketing, public relations and advertising but do not want to specialize in this field. The program will teach students how to better market their businesses or themselves for better job opportunities and will include instruction on using newer media forms, such as YouTube, Instagram and smart phone apps to accomplish this.
