Girls Go Digital, CodeChangers to hold tech camps throughout Utah
Youth across Utah will have the opportunity to try their hand at everything from photography and programming to web design, robotics and more when Girls Go Digital and CodeChangers offer computer science and technology programs throughout the state this summer.
Open to students ages 8 to 18, the day camps will be offered all the way from Ogden to St. George and feature hands-on projects that relate to the technology, design and engineering fields. The camps are part of the Dixie State University Department of Computer and Information Technology’s initiative to build a technology talent pipeline that prepares students to meet the significant demand for quality programmers, designers and developers in the technology marketplace.
“Kids need opportunities to create with technology, not just consume technology,” Rachel Ramsay, founder of Girls Go Digital and assistant professor of digital design at Dixie State University, said. “These camps are a great way to give them hands-on experience with everything from web design to soldering and pixel art.”
Providing a unique environment for girls to hack, code, design and make, Girls Go Digital empowers girls to create and innovate. Hands-on projects are tailored specifically for girls’ unique abilities and are presented by women who seek to increase females’ involvement in the computer science and technology sectors.
“It’s important for girls to know their perspective is essential in a growing field,” Ramsay said.
Open to boys and girls, CodeChangers camps include 14 classes and 24 hours of instruction during four days of coding and tech activities. Featuring all new activities this year, the camps include instruction on programming, micro controllers, pixel art, digital video, robots, soldering, photography and web design. Classes are divided by age and experience level.
The camps introduce participants to an array of hands-on projects that help them develop skills and build technical know-how within a fun summer camp environment. Additionally, participants in both camps gain valuable experience with technology that will help them with their schoolwork during the academic year.
“Both of these programs began at Dixie State University, which is a leader in offering these unique opportunities for students,” Ramsay said. “This summer, have your child be a part of a statewide movement to create with technology.”
