Dixie State University to screen documentary on Costa Rica
In an interdisciplinary effort, Dixie State University academic departments, Dixie Forum and DOCUTAH and are teaming up to host Producer/Director Matthew Eddy during a special screening of his documentary “A Bold Peace: Costa Rica’s Path of Demilitarization.”
The documentary will be shown on Wednesday, Feb. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Zion Room on the fifth floor of the Holland Centennial Commons on the Dixie State campus. Eddy will be on hand to introduce the film and answer questions afterward. Admission is free, and the public is encouraged to attend.
Screened at the DSU DOCUTAH International Documentary Film Festival in September 2016, “A Bold Peace: Costa Rica’s Path of Demilitarization” tells the story of how Costa Rica became one of the only nations to disband its military and redirect national resources toward education, health and the environment. The film highlights the parallels and contrasts between Costa Rica and the United States in recent political debates.
The screening event also will highlight the Dixie Sate course Natural History of Costa Rica. This class, which epitomizes the university’s “active learning. active life.” approach to education, is a collaboration between the Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, and English departments. As part of the course, students learn about the natural history, culture and geography of Costa Rica and then travel to the country, where they visit several field sites in different ecological settings and experience the culture.
The screening is hosted by Dixie Forum, which is a weekly lecture series designed to introduce the St. George community to diverse ideas and personalities while widening their worldviews. The free forum hosts presentations at noon on Tuesdays in the Browning Resource Center on the Dixie State campus. The series will be on recess next week, but will resume Feb. 28 with a presentation about the Dixie State-Dixie Regional Medical Center Summer Undergraduate Research Internship at Stanford.
