President’s Colleagues to discuss the evolving nature of higher education
Discussing the importance of changing the way institutions of higher education approach the educational process, Dr. Hugh M. Cannon will present at the next President’s Colleagues of Dixie State University meeting.
Cannon, the emeritus Adcraft/Simons-Michelson Professor of Marketing at Wayne State University, will present “Developing the Capacity to Learn: A Business School Perspective” at noon on Monday, Feb. 6. The lecture is set to take place in Lecture Hall 156 of Dixie State’s Russell C. Taylor Health Science Center, located on Dixie Regional Medical Center’s River Road campus, 1526 East Medical Center Drive. The meeting is free and open to the public.
In his presentation, Cannon will discuss his desire for institutions to place less emphasis on teaching and delivering knowledge and more emphasis on facilitating learning by helping students develop their ability to acquire the knowledge and skills they need as they face unanticipated problem. Speaking from the perspective of business schools, Cannon will discuss the implications this might have for the development of business school curriculum and how the same principles have implications for college curricula in general.
Cannon earned a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and master’s degrees in business and philosophy as well as a doctorate from New York University. He has taught at Miami University (of Ohio), Northwestern University and Wayne State University. During his career, he published more than 200 peer-reviewed scholarly papers and numerous invited book chapters.
From 1990 to 2006, he served as the executive director of the Association for Business Simulation and Experiential Learning, an international scholarly organization dedicated to promoting pedagogical research. In 2006, he received the organization’s Exceptional Service Award and currently serves as the association’s dean of fellows.
The President’s Colleagues of Dixie State University, established more than 20 years ago by former DSU President Dr. Douglas Alder, is a group of retired professors and other professionals who live mostly in the Washington County area.
