Dixie State University, Trailblazer Basketball pair up to celebrate teachers
Trailblazer Basketball will share the spotlight with local educators next weekend when Dixie State University celebrates area teachers.
All kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers and their families will receive free admission to the Trailblazer vs. Azusa Pacific game by showing their teacher IDs. Additionally, the first 100 teachers to enter the men's game will receive a “Celebrate Learning, Celebrate Teachers” T-shirt. The women tip off at 5 p.m. and the men take the court at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 21 in DSU’s Burns Arena.
“Our students are the product of K-12 education,” Chizu Matsubara, chair of Dixie State’s Department of Education, said. “The students are sent to us well equipped with the knowledge required to be successful in college. DSU appreciates the effort the teachers have made to prepare our students well.”
Dixie State University is a proud partner of the statewide initiative #BeATeacher, which addresses the teacher shortage our country is predicted to face in the coming years. Offering bachelor’s degrees in elementary and secondary education, Dixie State prepares students to shape the future by educating the country’s future leaders.
“We asked our students if they remember who was the winner of the 2010 Super Bowl or how many Top Ten hits Taylor Swift had in 2015. Many students couldn't answer the questions correctly,” Matsubara said. “However, when we asked who their favorite teacher was when they were in elementary school, they all had answers. They were able to articulate why the teachers were their favorite.
“Some teachers taught them to enjoy reading. Some taught them to love math. Others taught them to appreciate life. These are the impacts teachers have on young people. This is the reason why we appreciate, celebrate and respect our teachers. Teacher education programs around the country are preparing students to become the teachers who will impact the next generation to become responsible world citizens.”
Dixie State’s Department of Education creates learning experiences that foster collaboration, professionalism and competence in content and pedagogical knowledge. Through the integration of leadership, scholarship, reflection and community partnerships, the department prepares students to be outstanding teachers within diverse and changing communities.
