Dixie State to host annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration, community service project
In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Dixie State University Office of the President and Multicultural & Inclusion Center welcome the community to DSU’s third annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration.
This year’s commemoration, themed ‘Infinite Hope & Enduring Light,” will be held on place at noon on Tuesday, January 17, in the Gardner Center Lounge. Keynote speakers for the event are Tamu Smith and Zandra Vranes, hosts of “Sistas in Zion Radio,” authors of “Diary of Two Mad Black Mormons” and lecturers on the intersectionality of race, gender and religion.
“It’s important to talk about our differences and how we can use those to benefit the University and community as a whole,” said Daneka Souberbielle, director of the Multicultural & Inclusion Center. “Tamu and Zandra do a great job at using humor to break the ice and bridge gaps between people so important conversations about difficult topics can start.”
Following Smith and Vranes’ remarks will be a short presentation at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Garden outside the Gardner Center.
In observing the national day of service, the Multicultural & Inclusion Center also invites the DSU community to gather afterward in the Gardner Lounge at 3 p.m. to volunteer in a special service project for the Switchpoint Community Resource Center. The local nonprofit, which serves the Washington County homeless, is asking for medical supplies, and volunteers will join together in walking the neighborhoods adjacent to DSU to collect first aid kits, bandages, children’s medicine and other needed items.
Community members who are unable to volunteer can still contribute by donating medical supplies to the Multicultural & Inclusion Center on the second floor of the Browning Building at any time.
