Dixie State University presents lecture in association with ‘Lindstrom’ art exhibit
In association with “Lindstrom,” a retrospective exhibition of Gaell Lindstrom’s photography, paintings, ceramics and drawings, the Dixie State University Sears Art Museum Gallery is offering the lecture “Lindstrom: In Context.”
Dr. James Swensen, an associate professor of art history and the history of photography at Brigham Young University, will present the lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, in the Sears Art Museum Gallery, located in the Dolores Doré Eccles Fine Arts Center on the Dixie State campus.
During his presentation, Swensen will investigate the ways in which Lindstrom found a synthesis between the divergent ideas of realism and abstraction. Lindstrom struck this balance after studying at the University of Utah under George Dibble, who embraced abstraction and a modernist technique, and LeConte Stewart, who believed in realism and a more conservative approach to painting.
Swensen earned his doctorate from the University of Arizona in 2009, and his research interests include documentary photography and the art and photography of Utah and the American West. He has written “Picturing Migrants: The Grapes of Wrath and New Deal Documentary Photography” and “In a Rugged Land: Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange’s ‘Three Mormon Towns’ Collaboration, 1953-1954.” In 2016, he received the Butler Young Scholar Award from the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies.
Showcasing a variety of works by the artist who mastered a variety of mediums but is best known for his watercolors, “Lindstrom” features pieces completed throughout the seven-decade long career of the well-known Utah State University art professor, mentor and globetrotter. Made possible by Lindstrom’s family and friends who are sharing their prized possessions, “Lindstrom” is free to attend and is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Jan. 13.
