Dixie State University helps high schools celebrate Utah College Application Week
Dixie State University is celebrating Utah College Application Week by hosting assemblies complete with presentations from recent graduates and Dixie State President Richard “Biff” Williams, giveaways, and appearances by mascot Brooks the Bison.
Under the direction of the Utah System of Higher Education Outreach and Access Department, Utah College Application Week provides high school seniors at partner schools the opportunity to complete at least one college or university application during the school day. Particular focus is placed on students who would be the first in their families to attend college, low-income students and students who may not have otherwise considered applying.
“Research indicates that students who graduate from college with bachelor’s degrees make nearly a million dollars more over the course of their careers than those with high school diplomas alone,” Williams said. “I love helping local high school students prepare for bright futures and fulfilling careers.”
With each participating high school selecting a week in November to observe Utah College Application Week, college and universities throughout the state are making special appearances at schools to help students with the application process. Dixie State, specifically, went to high schools throughout Washington County to personally help students apply.
At Snow Canyon and Dixie high schools, the university held special assemblies in which one lucky student at each school won a $500 scholarship to Dixie State at the end of the presentation that highlighted the benefits of Dixie State’s more than 150 affordable academic programs and staying close to home for college. Additionally, representatives from the university traveled to Hildale, where they spoke to 12th grade students at Water Canyon School.
“I’d love for high school students to consider Dixie State University and take advantage of the active learning opportunities we offer,” Williams said. “The personalized attention students receive here help make a Dixie education second to none.”
