Dixie State University President’s Colleagues to discuss happiness at next meeting
Discussing the meaning and pursuit of happiness, Dr. Dick Harper will present at the next President’s Colleagues of Dixie State University meeting.
Harper will present “Happiness: The Art of Living Well” at noon on Monday, Nov. 7, in Lecture Hall 156 of Dixie State’s Russell C. Taylor Health Science Center, located on Dixie Regional Medical Center’s River Road campus, 1526 East Medical Center Drive. The meeting is free and open to the public.
After spending more than 45 years as a clinical psychologist, Harper has found that everyone has a strong desire for happiness. However, while being happy is a major goal in life, most people don’t know what happiness is. Harper believes that everyone has the potential to be happy, but happiness doesn’t just happen — it needs to be pursued. In his presentation, he will discuss this elusive goal of happiness to which everyone aspires.
Born, raised and educated in North Dakota, Harper received his undergraduate, master and doctoral degrees from the University of North Dakota. He is a veteran of both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force.
Over the years, Harper’s work has fallen into three categories: psychotherapy, consultation and education. As a psychotherapist, he has extensive experience in assessment and treatment, which has included such techniques as biofeedback and hypnosis. As a consultant, he has developed and given programs on topics ranging from succession to emotional intelligence. In addition, he has provided personal coaching services to entrepreneurs. As an educator, he has taught at numerous colleges and universities. He has published one book and more than 250 articles.
For several years, Harper and Dr. Owen Thompson hosted “The Country Docs” radio and TV programs. Though now almost retired, Harper spends a small amount of time in professional activities that include writing, speaking and consulting. He and his wife of 48 years, Maurita, currently live in St. George.
The President’s Colleagues of Dixie State University, established more than 20 years ago by former DSU President Dr. Douglas Alder, is a group of retired professors and other professionals who live mostly in the Washington County area.
