Dixie State University’s Brandon Lee to perform in solo piano recital
The College of the Arts at Dixie State University is pleased to announce a solo recital by pianist extraordinaire, Brandon Lee, to be held on Wednesday, October 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Eccles Concert Hall. Tickets are $25 and are available at the DSU Box Office. Patrons may call 435.652.7800 or visit dsutix.com to inquire about tickets. This piano recital is part of the “Celebrate Steinway” 2016 campaign, as the DSU Music Department continues its quest to become an All-Steinway School.
“Brandon Lee is a sublime artist and electrifies his audience every time he performs,” said Dr. Nancy Allred, DSU professor of piano studies. “His brilliant artistry, wonderful tone color and remarkable command of the piano are unmatched. He is simply one of the best pianists of his generation and he has graced the musical life of so many St. George residents during his three years in southern Utah.”
Lee has been thrilling audiences with his technical command and tonal sensitivity in performances for well over two decades. He has been awarded first place in more than 40 piano competitions nationwide, including the Second New York Piano Competition under the auspices of the Stecher and Horowitz Foundation, the National Federation of Music Clubs, the Music Teachers National Association, the Grand Junction Young Artist Concerto Competition and the Four Corners Piano Competition.
Lee has had training in private lessons and master class settings with some of the world’s foremost pianists including Leon Fleisher, Stephen Hough, Kevin Kenner, Olga Kern, Norman Krieger, Jerome Lowenthal, Robert MacDonald, Charles Rosen, Andre-Michel Schub, Abbey Simon and Ralph Votapek. In chamber music settings, he has had the privilege of working with the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, Pacifica Quartet and Fry Street Quartet. In addition, he has worked closely with Craig Jessop in rehearsal and performances, including Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion, and recitals in Washington D.C. and Arizona.
In concerto performances, Brandon has been a guest soloist with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, San Juan Symphony Orchestra, Gold Country Chamber Orchestra, Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra and the Utah State Symphony Orchestra. These performances took place in Utah, California, Colorado, New York City, Washington D.C. and Texas. His collaborative work encompasses a wide range of styles and setups, including piano duo, jazz trio and quartet, piano quintet and blues trio, as well as substantial work as an accompanist for voice and instrumental performances.
To elaborate on the variety of musical genres Lee performs, he was a founding member and keyboardist of a rock band, provided synth and keyboards with the band Kansas, performed progressive hip-hop music with Christylez Bacon from Washington, D. C., accompanied Audra MacDonald in performance and regularly performs cocktail style piano music.
Lee is a Utah State University alumnus, where his principal teacher was Gary Amano. Other teachers include Dennis Hirst, Marian Kerr and Linda Nakagawa. He completed a Master of Music degree with a piano performance and pedagogy emphasis, as well as a Bachelor of Music degree with emphasis in piano performance, graduating magna cum laude. Throughout the course of the last 12 years, Lee has been an educator in multiple capacities, including guest clinician, lecturer, collegiate music theory and aural training instructor, group piano/keyboard harmony instructor, as well as private piano instructor, where his students have garnered awards at competitions, with some culminating in performances with orchestra.
Relocating to St. George during the fall of 2013, Lee joined the piano faculty at DSU, and has taught private piano and piano-related courses for the DSU Music Department. He has contributed immensely to the growth of the DSU piano program. Most recently, he joined the faculties of both Vista Charter School and Tuacahn High School, teaching group piano. He also maintains a private studio of almost 40 young piano students. He and his wife McKenzie are looking forward to the birth of their first child in March.
The recital will be the third solo piano recital on the new Steinway that was donated by Zions Bank to Dixie State University in June. This donation is a wonderful addition to the DSU Music Department as it progresses in its goal of becoming an All-Steinway School. The College of the Arts has planned a year of stellar piano performances to showcase the magnificent instrument and to promote the art of piano performance at Dixie State.
Other upcoming piano events for the DSU Music Department include the DSU faculty recital on Friday, Nov. 4, a duo piano recital by Brandon Lee and Christopher Giles on Saturday, Nov. 12 and the DSU Piano Ensemble Concert on Wednesday, Nov. 30.
