Dixie State University hosts open house of technology center
Dixie State University’s Department of Computer and Information Technology is celebrating the institution’s bright future with an open house of Smith’s Computer Center.
Celebrating the grand re-opening of the center after an extensive renovation, the open house will feature innovative demonstrations and opportunities to try out the technology used in the CIT department and university’s community and outreach programs. The event is set to take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22. Smith’s Computer Center is located immediately south of the M.K. Cox Performing Arts Center on the Dixie State campus.
“We are excited about this new technology space designed to house our more than 425 students who are currently in the CIT and CS programs as well as facilitate our community and outreach initiatives,” Eric Pedersen, dean of DSU’s College of Science & Technology, said. “We see a bright future in the growth of technology programs at Dixie State University and the Smith’s Computer Center will be a great place to learn about design, web, information technology, software development and computer science.”
Residents of all ages are invited to attend and a portion of the programming is geared toward youth ages 8 to 18. Attendees will have the opportunity to build and program Lego robots and experience CodeChangers’ “What, Why, Learn, Apply” approach to education. Participants will also “Hack, Design, Code & Make” to gain the Girls Go Digital camp experience.
Additionally, information will be available about SheTech, a technology council for women, and Dixie State’s Association of Computing Machinery Club and ACM-Women, which meet weekly and participate in international programming contests. Attendees can also learn about Code Camp, a contest that gives aspiring programmers, designers and entrepreneurs 24 consecutive hours to build a program, app or product.
“We hope the community will come and participate in hands-on activities for all ages at our newly remodeled facility and see what’s happening in technology and innovation at Dixie State University,” Pedersen said.
