Dixie State University’s Udvar-Hazy School of Business awards $20,000 in scholarships
ST. GEORGE, Utah — Dixie State University’s Udvar-Hazy School of Business has awarded more than $20,000 in scholarship funds for the 2016-17 academic year.
Twenty-two students have received the competitive scholarships, which make it possible for many to complete their degrees. Recipients have an average overall GPA of 3.6, more than 44 credits in the business school completed and a business school GPA of 3.73.
“We are happy with the students who apply every year for our scholarships,” Dr. Nate Staheli, chair of DSU’s Accounting Department, said. “Unfortunately, we are unable to award scholarships to each applicant. We have great students who would be eligible, but funding is limited each year."
Dixie State’s Udvar-Hazy School of Business houses the university’s Accounting and Business departments. The school offers certificates in general marketing and eMarketing, associate degrees in general marketing, business and operations management and bachelor’s degrees in accounting, finance and business administration with emphases in accounting, finance and management information systems.
Accomplished faculty who teach accounting concepts in context of their application lead the Accounting Department. DSU accounting students gain applied, heuristic learning experiences in highly interactive, student-oriented learning environments. For example, as part of the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, students offer community members free income-tax preparation each February through April. Additionally, DSU’s Accounting Practicum provides graduates the opportunity to assist small businesses.
Dixie State’s Business Department offers quality education, hands-on experiences, and close student-faculty relationships in an environment that promotes the highest standards of professionalism and integrity. The department houses the Institute for Business Integrity, which integrates ethics discussions into curriculum and sponsors a series of ethics-related seminars. As part of the Business program, DSU students have provided small-business training to students at a school for the deaf and blind in Russia, delivered computer equipment to students in Ecuador and participated in a number of marketing and operations management projects for local businesses.
"Our students are doing great things in the community and around the world,” Dr. Kyle Wells, dean of DSU’s School of Business and Communication, said. “We are very happy with the quality of education we are able to give at a competitive rate. Our students are going out after graduation and really making a difference and our donors are excited to be part of that."
