Earth Day and Sustainability in Focus at Dixie Forum

ST. GEORGE, Utah, April 14, 2016 – Dixie State University is proud to present the Sustainability Club and Committee, who will be presenting in celebration of Earth Day, as a part of its weekly lecture series Dixie Forum: A Window on the World. The presentation will be held in the Dunford Auditorium in the Browning Resource Center on DSU campus from noon to 12:50 p.m. on Tuesday April 19. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend. The population of the earth is continually growing. Water and air are crucial resources needed to sustain life, yet these resources are becoming more strained. This week's Dixie Form will present different viewpoints discussed in order to grasp the significance of human impact on air and water resources, as it can be hard to detect any effects in our local environment. Tracey O’Kelly is the founder of both the Sustainability Club and Sustainability Committee on campus. She works as a library paraprofessional while also working on her baccalaureate in integrated studies with emphases in human communication and business. Presenting alongside O’Kelly will be assistant professor Rico Del Sesto, who has been performing research at the interface of organic materials and analytical chemistry for nearly 20 years. Del Sesto is currently developing materials that are capable of enhanced extraction for analytical methods development, materials that enhance the efficacy of antibiotics and unique materials with optical and magnetic behavior. The presentation will also feature two students, club president Chloe Lichtenberg and Cameron Carlson, both sophomores and participating in the Sustainability Club. They will discuss how Washington County can live more environmentally friendly and how our everyday lives impact our planet. Dixie Forum is a weekly lecture series designed to introduce the St. George community and DSU students, faculty and staff to diverse ideas and personalities while widening their worldviews via a 50-minute presentation. Dixie Forum will conclude for Spring 2016 with a presentation on undergraduate research opportunities at DSU by associate professor of English, Stephen Armstrong. The series will return in August, during the fall 2016 semester.” For more information on Dixie State University's Dixie Forum series, please contact DSU Forum Coordinator John Burns at 435-879-4712 or burns@utahtech.edu or visit http://humanities.utahtech.edu/the-dixie-forum/.
