In celebration of Dixie State University’s 2015 Homecoming Week, the iconic D on the Hill will glow red all week and the entire community is encouraged to Rock the Red as well.
With the theme Rock the Red, Homecoming week 2015, held Sept. 21 through 26, is the perfect time for all DSU fans to show their Dixie Spirit by wearing red and attending Homecoming festivities. Boasting fan-favorite traditions as well as new activities, this year’s Homecoming week features something for everyone. From the formal kickoff of the university’s strategic plan to a variety of athletic competitions, you don’t want to miss the fun.
Getting the week off to an exciting start, the Dixie State University Alumni Association will host a Classic Car Show and All-American Dinner in front of the Wade Alumni House, 684 E. 500 South. Starting at 6 p.m., the community is invited to enjoy hot dogs and apple pie prepared by the association.
Headlining Tuesday, Sept. 22, the annual Miss Dixie State Homecoming Queen Pageant will be held at 7:30 p.m., in the M.K. Cox Performing Arts Center. Tickets for the pageant are $5 and can be purchased at the door.
Learn about the future of the Dixie State University on Wednesday, Sept. 23, when President Richard B. Williams presents the institution’s strategic plan, Dixie 2020: Status to Stature. The event, which will outline the university’s goals and strategies for reaching these benchmarks in the next five years, will start at noon in the Cox auditorium. Immediately following the presentation, a free barbecue lunch will be served.
That evening, cheer on the Dixie State volleyball team as they take on Notre Dame de Namur at 6 p.m. in the Student Activities Center. Admission to athletic events is $7 for adults and free for children 12 and younger. Tickets are available at www.dsutix.com or at the door.
Later, round up the entire family and head to the old airport, 620 S. Airport Road, for a free screening of Disney Pixar’s “Inside Out.” The doors open at 7 p.m. and the movie will start at 8:30 p.m. There will be plenty of room for everyone, as the heartwarming story will be shown on two screens.
On Thursday, Sept. 24, come on over to Hansen Stadium and take in a soccer double-header. The DSU women’s soccer team will kick off the action at 4:30 p.m. in a match vs. Azusa Pacific. Following the women’s game, the men will have their turn taking on Azusa Pacific at 7 p.m.
Opening Friday’s full day of festivities, the Alumni Assembly will be held at 10 a.m. at the Concert Hall in the Dolores Dorè Eccles Fine Arts Center. The free talent show highlights the skills and gifts of Dixie alumni.
Then at noon, the class of 1965 will be inducted into the 50 Club at the Wade Alumni House. Tickets are $6. The tribute to alumni will continue that evening with the Alumni Banquet at the Student Activities Center at 6 p.m. The cost is $14, and tickets to both events can be purchased by calling 435-652-7535.
Also at noon, current students will showcase their Dixie Spirit through song and dance at Rock the Mall. For this event, held at the North Encampment Mall, student organizations set the lyrics of Dixie State University’s school song to the music of their favorite tunes and complete the act with full choreography.
End the day with the Rebel 5K at 11:59 p.m. Join President Williams, alumni and students at Hansen Stadium as they raise funds for student scholarships. The entry fee is $15 for students and alumni and $20 for everyone else. Register at utahtech.edu/rebel5k.
Line Tabernacle Street from 700 East to Main Street at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, to enjoy the floats, bands and giveaways that are part of the annual Homecoming Parade. Then head over to the Tabernacle for the Founders’ Day Assembly and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at 11:30 a.m.
The soccer teams will have another double-header Saturday. Again, the women will lead things off, this time at 10 a.m. and the men will follow at 12:30 p.m. as both teams take on Point Loma Nazarene at Hansen Stadium. At noon, the DSU volleyball team will play Holy Names in the Student Activities Center.
Later in the day, join the Dixie State Alumni Association for a free tailgate party complete with grilled burgers, bounce houses, and prize drawings. The fun will start at 3:45 p.m. in front of the Wade Alumni house. Walk across the street at 6 p.m. to cheer on Dixie State’s football team as they take on Azusa Pacific.
