[one_third padding="0 10px 0 0"] phillip-garner [/one_third][two_third_last] Tuesday, September 8th, 2015 Dixie State University's weekly "Dixie Forum: A Window on the World" series continues this week with a lecture examining the basic facts pertaining to economic growth around the world. Dr. Phillip Garner, an assistant professor in Dixie State's Department of Business, will present from noon to 12:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Dunford Auditorium in the Browning Resource Center on the DSU campus. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend. [/two_third_last] Through exploring various hypotheses that have been put forward as explanations for the wealth and poverty of nations, the forum will look at why some countries are rich and others are poor. Additionally, Garner will discuss why the world is much wealthier today than it was in the past, as the standard of living that richer countries of the world enjoy today would have been unimaginable to citizens' distant ancestors. As part of this discussion, the forum will address why not all countries have shared equally in the economic growth of the last two centuries. A native of Las Vegas, Garner received a bachelor's degree in economics from Brigham Young University and a doctorate in economics from Brown University. He has extensively researched economic growth and development. Additionally, Garner has published several academic articles on economic growth and has presented his research in conferences at Harvard and Oxford universities. Dixie Forum is a weekly lecture series designed to introduce the St. George community and DSU students, faculty and staff to diverse ideas and personalities while widening their worldviews via a 50-minute presentation. Next week, Dixie Forum will continue at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 22, in the Dunford Auditorium. Dr. Florence Bacabac, director of Dixie State University's Women's Resource Center, will present a forum titled "International Women in Focus."
