U.S. and Asian Relations at next President’s Colleagues Meeting

Dixie State University will host its fourth President's Colleagues of DSU meeting of the 2014-15 academic year on Monday, January 5, 2015, featuring a presentation on the current state of relations between the United States, Asia and China, by colleague Dr. Robert Delahunty.
The meeting will begin at 12 noon, in Room 156 of the DSC Russell C. Taylor Health Science Center, located on the Dixie Regional Medical Center's River Road campus at 1526 Medical Center Drive. The meeting is free and open to the public.
Dr. Delahunty's presentation, entitled "Towards a Concert in Asia?," will discuss how the rise of China, both economically and militarily, is widely perceived as threatening to several of China's Asian neighbors and as undermining the United States' influence in East Asia. Delahunty will provide insight on the of the dangers of the currents trends, citing the distinguished Australian strategic analyst Hugh White, who urges a diplomatic effort to create a power-sharing arrangement, or "Concert of Asia," that would defuse tensions and maintain peace and security in the region.
A native of New York City, Delahunty graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University in 1968, and he was awarded a Kellett Fellowship to study at Oxford University in England, from which he obtained a Bachelor of Art degree with First Class honors in Classics in 1970 and a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in 1972. He then studied or taught philosophy in England, Scotland, and Canada until 1980. He returned to the United States in 1980 to study law at Harvard Law School, from which he graduated cum laude in 1983.
Delahunty began his legal practice at Sullivan & Cromwell in NYC from 1983-86. He joined the Appellate Section of the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in 1986, and began working for the Office of Legal Counsel in the Justice Department in 1989. He was Special Assistant to the Solicitor of Labor in 1991-92, a Visiting Associate Professor of Law at the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America in 1999-2000, and Deputy General Counsel at the White House Office of Homeland Security in 2002-03. Since 2004, Delahunty has been a Professor of Law at the University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis, Minn.
The President's Colleagues of Dixie State University, established more than 20 years ago by former DSU President Dr. Douglas Alder, is a group of retired professors and other professionals who live mostly in the St. George and Washington County area. Dr. Alder, who also started an Honors Program at DSU, organized the Colleagues as a way to increase academic activities on campus.
The Colleagues meet together once a month during the academic year to hear presentations from each other and/or invited guests. The February Colleagues meeting will feature a presentation entitled "Tales of the Circuit Court," by retired Circuit Court Judge Robert F. Owens Monday, February 2.
